Rocking Chair

While Ryan has been busy with all of the home projects, I have been working on some things myself for fun…when I am not tending to our family and home. Before Aveline was born we bought a child’s rocking chair for Novella at the ReStore (are you starting to see a trend of where we like to spend out spare time?  lol). As you can see, the chair is in pretty good shape,  but I knew the seat cover would need to be replaced.

Once we finally got around to taking the cover off, we found that the cushion and the material used to hold the cushion were in HORRIBLE, DISGUSTING shape, they were molding and NASTY…so glad we took it apart when we did, before Novella really played with it too much. I proceeded to go get some super thick fabric, doubled it  up and cut it into strips and attached it using upholstery nails. I wove the pieces in and out of one another to make a solid piece for the cushion I was going to make.

I felt really proud of how it came out, and I did trim up the slack around the edges. Next I made a pillow top cushion out of a pillow case, I just cut it to the size I wanted, stitched it with my sewing machine, the stuffed it until it was nice and squishy soft! I took Novella with me to pick the decorative upholstery nails and the fabric she wanted for her chair. next was attaching it to cover and look right. Ryan helped me with the heavy duty staple gun, and I did the rest while N was napping so that she could have a fun surprise when she woke up a couple of days ago!

It really is amazing what a little bit of fabric update can do! I would eventually like to add some ruffles around the bottom, but all in due time. For now we are enjoying the anchors! Oh, and to go with those Anchors, I made a special pillow and pillowcase for the chair as well. Since Ryan is in the Coast Guard, I used one of his old retired blouses to make a pillow case. The best part is, if it needs to be washed, I just have to unbutton it like the blouse it was originally created to be, and pull the pillow out! Novella was super excited about the chair, and then she noticed the pillow, and said, “Momma, pillow say Coast Guard! Momma, pillow have pockets!!”. Needless to say, she is pleased, and that makes it totally worth it!
